Description: 1950s Aerial View of U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters,
Suitland, Maryland. Suitland’s open space proved an inviting home
to expanding and relocating agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau.
The agency moved to Federal Office Building #3 (center) in 1942. The Census
Bureau’s presence spurred residential and commercial development in
the surrounding area and drew additional federal agencies to what would
become the “Suitland Federal Complex.” Photo Credit: U.S. Census Bureau, Public

Because of the immense volume of data being tabulated and need for the specialized
technology, the Census Bureau employed highly skilled men and women to maintain
and custom-build the agency’s machinery and computers. In this photograph,
technicians clean and maintain some of the hundreds of key-punches used
to produce punch cards for tabulation.
