Birmingham, AL -- Individuals and businesses who suffered losses in the March 10-11 floods and storms that hit Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties have one month to apply for federal/state assistance, Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Butler of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today.
The federal official urged area residents affected by the storms to apply as soon as possible. Butler said, "we feel there still might be some victims who have not yet submitted an application. Once the May 16 deadline expires, no applications can be accepted."
To register for disaster assistance, applicants must call the toll-free FEMA registration line at 1-800-462-9029. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) may register by calling 1-800-462-7585. Both lines operate from 8 AM - 6 PM (EDT) Monday through Friday.
Aid is available to eligible renters, homeowners, or business owners who live in the two declared counties. Federal and state programs include: various types of disaster housing assistance, individual and family grants to meet serious uninsured disaster-related needs, and low-interest Small Business Administration (SBA) loans.
Any person who already has registered but has questions concerning the application can call the FEMA toll-free disaster Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 or 1-800-660-8005 for those with hearing or speech impairments. The application and Helpline offices are open from 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday.
