More Green Practices

In This Section

In addition to green building, energy and water conservation, green power purchases, and acquiring green fleet, EPA utilizes several additional green practices to help reduce the Agency's environmental footprint. These additional green practices were gleaned from a set of goals EPA established in 2002 to help the Agency meet the requirements of Executive Order (E.O.) 13101, Greening the Government Through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Federal Acquisition. E.O. 13423 has since superseded E.O 13101, however EPA's goals remain in place. These goals help the Agency meet important components of its mission:

Goals

Waste Reduction and Recycling
Learn more about EPA's Headquarters and Regional Office and laboratory recycling programs.

Green Printing and Copying
Discover what measures EPA is taking to green its printing and copying process and how these efforts have gone above and beyond federal requirements.

Green Office Supplies
Learn about several useful resources and programs that make finding and buying green office products easy.

Green Meetings
This Web site from EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances provides a number of green meeting resources for meeting planners, hosts, service suppliers, and attendees. EPA is attempting to "green" all meetings planned or funded by the Agency.

Green Electronics
Obtain information on how to recycle old electronic products and find new electronic products that are more eco-friendly.

Green Landscaping
Learn about how to include provisions for green landscaping (e.g., water-conserving, low impact development, use of native species) and integrated pest management in construction and O&M documents.

Green Janitorial Services
Learn about how to increase the use of green cleaning products and how to develop contract language and incorporate specifications for environmentally preferable products and services.

EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention
The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 states that "pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source whenever feasible." EPA promotes pollution prevention as an essential part of its mission to protect human health and the environment. The Agency's Office of Pollution Prevention Web site provides information on pollution prevention goals, overall strategy, and current activities.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
This page provides links to information and resources related to EMS for businesses, associations, the public, and state and federal agencies.

For More Information

EPA has developed four Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Guides to provide information and references for federal procurement officials to help them better consider the environmental aspects of purchasing decisions. EPP—a federal program that encourages and assists agencies with purchasing environmentally preferable products and services—published the following guides:

EPA has also designed a guide to help federal offices meet the challenges of various Executive Orders that direct agencies to implement green purchasing requirements.
