Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge's 12th Annual Children's Fishing Derby
Northeast Region, June 20, 2009
Print Friendly Version
Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge will be holding its 12th Annual Children's Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 20, 2008.  The event will take place at the Headquarters Pond at Cobscook Bay State Park which is part of Moosehorn NWR.  The event runs from 11 am to 1 pm, but children and their parents can arrive and register as early as 10 am to stake out a good fishing spot along the shore.  The refuge and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will be stocking the pond with hundreds of brook trout before the event to ensure that every child has the chance to catch at least one fish.  Children up to age 16 can participate in the derby and may catch up to the state limit of 5 trout.  Prizes will be given in various categories and children will also be eligible to win random prizes.  Typically over 100 children participate in the event each year.  Free hotdogs, chips, drinks, and cookies will be available to everyone present.  Many food items and prizes are donated or provided to derby organizers at a discounted rate by local businesses.  The derby is a joint effort between Moosehorn NWR, the Friend of Moosehorn support group, the Maine Department of Conservation and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.  It promises to be a fun event again this year!
