Environmental and Thermal Engineering Laboratory

Environmental and Thermal Engineering Laboratory: This highly instrumented facility has primary and secondary methods for determining energy and system performance.

The ETEL facility supports research on refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Uses of the facility include performance evaluations of alternative refrigerants and equipment components for systems using these chemicals. Available equipment includes compressor calorimetry; environmental chambers for refrigerator/freezer and/or heat-pump/air-conditioning testing; a bench-scale automobile air-conditioning system; a self-contained supermarket display case; and a supermarket refrigeration system consisting of four display cases and a separate compressor rack. This highly instrumented facility has primary and secondary methods for determining energy and system performance. Temperature, pressure, mass flow, wattage, and power usage can be monitored with instrumentation of accuracies meeting or exceeding the industry standards applicable to such systems.
