In-House Technology Research
| ORD conducts vigorous and well-recognized research in environmental technology, including research through technology transfer in monitoring, treatment, prevention, and cleaner technologies. This office uses a multidisciplinary in-house staff of scientists and engineers to conduct an applied research, development, and technology transfer program for new environmental technologies.
Technologies of interest are determined by the critical needs of EPA program offices for understanding how current or emerging technologies perform in a specific problem area, for example, mercury control and disinfection of drinking water. ORD also responds to the need for new technology development for emerging issues where there is a gap in work performed by external research organizations and where ORD may provide a unique multimedia, multidisciplinary approach. A postdoctoral program is used to quickly engage new expertise if needed to supplement ORD staff. Cooperative Research and Development Agreements may be used to collaboratively develop technology approaches with private-sector support for research from proof-of-concept to pilot-scale demonstration. Examples of this type of research are especially found in the green chemistry, green engineering, and pollution prevention tools development areas.
