Bureau of Reclamation -- Water Management & Environmental Mitigation

The Bureau of Reclamation's environmental mitigation program addresses various mitigation requirements stemming from legal mandates and agency commitments. The program is intended to offset adverse effects on environmental conditions that result from Reclamation's water management activities.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The program is fairly well-managed and has a specific purpose (to avoid, reduce, or compensate for adverse environmental conditions that are the result of existing water management activities) and a specific scope (includes various mitigation activities which address the adverse effects of Reclamation's existing water management upon the environment).
  • The program faces some difficulty in gathering data on its performance measures. Though many natural factors outside Reclamation's control affect performance, systematic data collection processes and procedures for the program's performance measures are under development.
  • The program will continue to increase its number of collaborative working relationships with other Federal agencies, states, local governments, tribes, and other entities in cooperatively meeting mitigation objectives.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Establishing systematic data collection processes and procedures for program performance measures.
  • Developing Policy and/or Directives and Standards that address the requirements of the Environmental Mitigation program.
  • Improving the linkage between program performance and program budget requests.
