Broadcasting to Near East Asia and South Asia

The Broadcasting Board of Governors broadcasts news and information to Near East Asia and South Asia via the Voice of America radio and television, Radio Sawa, al-Hurra television, and Radio Free Europe, in order to promote the open communication of information and ideas.

  • The program has significantly increased its audience size over three years. The combined, unduplicated weekly audience for Radio Sawa and al-Hurra television was 22.8 million in the Middle East in 2004, and has increasd to 42.1 million in 2006.
  • Audience awareness of BBG programs in target areas is increasing. In Pakistan, audience awareness (the percentage of the surveyed population that is aware of the programming) has increased from 2% in 2002 to 18% in 2006. Audience awareness directly influences audience reach.
  • The signal strength for BBG broadcasts is improving. Ratings range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Signal strength for broadcasts to Iran improved from 2.6 in 2002 to 4.0 in 2006.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Revise BBGs strategic plan to build on a market-based approach to broadcasting to reach audiences in their preferred media w/ programming tailored to their needs, and to support US strategic interests
  • Design and implement a performance measure to assess the quality and credibility of the radio and television programs, since audiences will regularly tune in to broadcasts they can trust.
  • Design and implement long-term performance measures that align w/ BBGs mission to promote freedom and democracy by broadcasting objective news about the US and the world to Near East & South Asia.
