Evidence Shows a "Code of the Street" Predisposes Youth to Violence
Acting tough may work as a survival mechanism in some neighborhoods, but youth who adopt a "code of the street" are much more likely to engage in violence.
The code includes using force to respond to disrespect. NIJ-sponsored researchers studied African-American youths in Georgia and Iowa who had adopted the code. Two years later, the code emerged as the strongest single predictor of violence.
