Facilities & Operations

NNSA has eight sites with countless buildings and structures that house some of the most intricate and important national security work in the country.  NNSA strives to operate and maintain all of its facilities in a safe, secure, efficient, reliable, and compliant way, to ensure that each of the facilities are operationally ready to execute nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship tasks on time.  NNSA manages the operating costs, facility and equipment maintenance costs, and environmental, safety and health costs for each of NNSA’s facilities.

NNSA works on the following:

  • Operations of Facilities- operates and maintains NNSA-owned programmatic capabilities, including both workforce and facilities, so that they are ready to perform stockpile work and/or other major projects.
  • Program Readiness- involves selected activities that support more than one facility, campaign, or stockpile work activity, which are essential to the objectives of maintaining the nuclear weapons stockpile.
  • Material Recycle and Recovery- recycles and recovers plutonium, enriched uranium, and tritium from fabrication and assembly operations, limited life components, and dismantlement operations in support of weapons and components.
  • Containers- provides directive-approved shipping container for the safe transport of nuclear materials and components.
  • Storage- enhances national security by providing effective storage and management of surplus plutonium pits, highly enriched uranium (HEU), and other weapons and nuclear materials in compliance with all departmental requirements.
  • Construction- projects that are created to address specific needs, including: the replacement of aging facilities; incorporation of modern safety, security, and environmental protection standards; reconfiguration and consolidation to improve the efficiency of the nuclear weapons complex; and incorporation of new technology for the future needs of the program.
