Cyber-enabled
Discovery and Innovation (CDI) Templates and Keywords
As part of the CDI preliminary and full proposal submission process,
the principal investigators are required to submit by e-mail to
cdi@nsf.gov two spreadsheets saved
in “comma-delimited” (CSV) format:
• List of Personnel, Collaborators and Affiliates, including
their conflicts of interest
• List of Themes and Keywords relevant to the particular proposal
Templates and sample files:
Note: CDI Preliminary proposal submission FastLane Advisory:
* Please be advised that additional electronic documents are required
for all CDI Preliminary proposal submissions. See Section V.G. in
the CDI Program Announcement.
* Please note:
1. The CSV format is a "flat text" file that does not
preserve formatting. Don't be concerned if its appearance changes
from your original.
2. When entering themes and NSF-listed keywords in Excel cells,
copy and paste from the NSF-provided lists if possible. Use similar
unformatted data entry for PI-chosen keywords and conflict-of-interest
information. NSF personnel will be using automated handling of these
documents. Carriage returns, splitting items over multiple cells,
extra spaces, etc., will interfere with automated handling.
INSTRUCTIONS
The specific instructions for the preparation of these spreadsheets
are provided below.
List of Personnel, Collaborators, and Affiliates
Submit an Excel spreadsheet containing two lists: one lists the
last names, first names and institutional affiliations of all PIs,
Co-PIs, and other senior personnel (columns C through E in the template
and sample files); the second one lists the full names and institutional
affiliations of all people having conflicts of interest with any
PIs, Co-PIs, and other senior personnel (columns F through H in
the template and sample files). Please remember to include the proposal
number in column B for each row with relevant information, as indicated
in the sample file. This list will be used by NSF to check for conflicts
of interest (COI)* in assembling the review community; the information
must be provided according to the template provided and must be
saved using the CSV format. The filename should be the proposal
number followed by the three characters “coi” (for example,
for a proposal number 0912345, this file name will be 0912345coi.csv
where the extension csv will be automatically added by Excel when
saving the file using the csv format).
List of Themes and Keywords
Submit an Excel spreadsheet listing the themes and keywords relevant
for the proposal. This list identifies the primary and other relevant
CDI themes and up to three keywords selected from the CDI keyword
list (or of the PI’s own choosing) that best describe the
major areas of the multidisciplinary research and education being
proposed. This information will be used internally to NSF to facilitate
the review process and not to exclude areas not explicitly represented
in the CDI keyword list.
Themes: "From Data to Knowledge," "Understanding
Complexity" and "Virtual Organizations." (in columns
C through E in the template and sample files)
Keywords: The CDI keyword list is available on
http://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/cdi/CDI_keywords.xls
(in columns F through H in the template and sample files)
Please write the proposal number in column B as indicated in the
sample file.
The information must be prepared according to the template provided
and must be saved using the CSV format. The filename should be the
proposal number followed by the three characters “kyw”
(for example, for a proposal number 0912345, this file name will
be 0912345kyw.csv where the extension csv will be automatically
added by Excel when saving the file using the csv format).
*Potential Conflict of Interest (COI)
The following categories of people may have a conflict of interest
in reviewing your proposal:
1. Collaborators and Co-Editors. A list of all persons in alphabetical
order (including their current organizational affiliations) who
are currently, or who have been collaborators or co-authors with
the individual on a project, book, article, report, abstract or
paper during the 48 months preceding the submission of the proposal.
Also include those individuals who are currently or have been co-editors
of a journal, compendium, or conference proceedings during the 24
months preceding the submission of the proposal. If there are no
collaborators or co-editors to report, this should be so indicated.
2. Graduate Advisors and Postdoctoral Sponsors. A list of the names
of the individual’s own graduate advisor(s) and principal
postdoctoral sponsor(s), and their current organizational affiliations.
3. Thesis Advisor and Postgraduate-Scholar Sponsor. A list of all
persons (including their organizational affiliations), with whom
the individual has had an association as thesis advisor, or with
whom the individual has had an association within the last five
years as a postgraduate-scholar sponsor. The total number of graduate
students advised and postdoctoral scholars sponsored also must be
identified.
