SEATTLE -- Improving safety and health for workers in the fishing and fish-processing industry is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Seattle-based North Pacific Fishing Vessel Owners Association (NPFVOA). OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations. NPFVOA represents several hundred fishing vessel owners, fish processors, suppliers and underwriters. "This alliance will provide information, guidance and training resources that will help protect workers' health and safety," said Richard Terrill, OSHA's regional administrator in Seattle. "It will focus on eliminating major hazards in the fishing and fish-processing industry." Leslie Hughes, NPFVOA executive director, will sign the alliance documents Monday, May 17, on behalf of the association, and Terrill will sign for OSHA. NPFVOA and OSHA have developed a strong working relationship, having worked together since 1990 to develop an industrial safety program for the factory trawler fleet. The alliance formalizes the relationship and allows them to enhance efforts to improve safety aboard commercial fishing vessels. OSHA and NPFVOA will jointly conduct training and education programs on ergonomics; eliminating hazards of slips, trips and falls; machine guarding; programs to prevent machinery from starting up during repair or maintenance; personal protective equipment; emergency preparedness and bloodborne pathogens. OSHA and NPFVOA plan to use their Web sites, as well as traditional publications to distribute information, and OSHA will participate in NPFVOA conferences and Medical Emergencies at Sea classes. OSHA staff and industry safety and health professionals in NPFVOA will receive cross-training in best practices, and the alliance will foster NPFVOA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs and sharing of best practices information with others in the commercial fishing industry.
