The Office of Agricultural Affairs of the United States Department of Agriculture at the American Embassy in Warsaw is representing U.S. agricultural interests in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. This includes monitoring and analyzing agricultural policy and development, promoting U. S. agricultural trade and fostering global food security. We do this by developing and maintaining close ties with government officials and private sector contacts in each of these countries. We also work closely with various U.S. agricultural cooperator organizations to identify and expand market opportunities for U.S. agricultural products and facilitate contact between local importers and U.S. exporters.
Report on Global Biofuel Production Now Available Worldwide there is increasing interest in biofuels as a renewable energy source. In November USDA released a new report summarizing the state of global biofuel production and use. The Polish translation of this research is attached. A link to this report in English is: http://www.ers.usda.gov/AmberWaves/November07/Features/Biofuels.htm Highlights from the report include: - Global biofuel production tripled between 2000 and 2007, but still accounts for less than 3 percent of the global transportation fuel supply.
- Increased biofuel demand has contributed to higher world food and feed prices.
- Biofuels will likely be part of a portfolio of solutions to high energy prices, including conservation, more efficient energy use, and use of other alternative fuels.
We have a number of cooperative projects in biofuels, for more information at the US Embassy in Warsaw contact Wlodek Makowski agwarsaw@fas.usda.gov, or call 022-504-2336
In addition, the US State Department is sponsoring a Washington International Renewable Energies conference in March 2008. For more information on this conference see: http://www.wirec2008.gov/wps/portal/wirec2008
