HOUSTON AREA OFFICES AND THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF MEXICO IN HOUSTON

Overview:

OSHA and the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston an Alliance to provide Hispanic workers in the Houston area with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to occupational safety and health hazards during hurricane response and clean –up activities.

II. Implementation Team Meetings:

The Houston North and Houston South Area Office’s Compliance Assistance Specialists attended several planning meetings at the Mexican Consulate. In addition, the Region VI DRA Joe Reina had several meetings with the Mexican consulate related to Hispanic worker safety.


III. Events and Products

Training and Education
  • Events – None
     
  • Seminars – Arranged for Hazard Communication Training pertaining to hurricane clean-up through OAI, a hurricane related grantee. Approximately 12 attendees.

Outreach and Communication
  • Events – The Houston OSHA offices distributed hundreds of hurricane related quick cards and fact sheets during Hispanic community events and during two events with the Mexican Consulates mobile consulate.
     
  • Products – No products developed at this time
Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
  • Events – Hurricane related issues are discussed with the Mexican Consulate in conjunction with other meetings including hurricane safety and employee safety in the New Orleans area.
     
  • Products – No products developed at this time
IV. Results

Hundreds of Hispanic employees were provided information related to hurricane Katrina and Rita clean up hazards along the Gulf Coast. Contacts and support information was exchanged between OSHA and the Mexican Consulate to assist efforts in the New Orleans area.
