U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA forms 2 safety alliances with Nebraska Department of Education

OMAHA, Neb. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) together have formed two alliances to provide occupational safety and health education to students.

The alliances are with the NDE's Industrial, Manufacturing and Engineering Systems Career Field curriculum and instruction team, and SkillsUSA Nebraska, a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure that America has a skilled workforce.

"These alliances provide an opportunity for OSHA and the NDE to have a positive impact on safety and health for young workers," said Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City, Mo. "As we formalize our relationship through these agreements, OSHA looks forward to instilling an early safety culture in our nation's youth."

The alliance with the NDE's Industrial, Manufacturing and Engineering System Career Field will provide educators and students in these technical fields with instructional materials, guidance and access to training resources about occupational safety and health.

Outreach and communication goals are the focus of the alliance with SkillsUSA Nebraska. Specifically, the alliance will focus on building expertise on workplace hazard recognition and prevention, as well as developing ways of communicating this information to educators, employers and young workers.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 470 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
