Signing ceremony slated for Dec. 11 at stadium CONCORD, N.H. - Providing employees at colleges and universities in the Granite State with training to minimize workplace hazards and enhance their safety and health are the goals of a new alliance among the Concord Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' safety consultation program (NH-DES-CP) and the New Hampshire College and University Campus Assistance Cooperative (NHC3UA). The alliance partners will develop and deliver job-related safety and health training and education programs for employees of NHC3UA member campuses in New Hampshire. The training will address such topics as hazard communication, hazardous energy control, electrical safety, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, fall protection, work in confined spaces, and developing safety and health programs. "This is an exciting opportunity to reach workers on campuses throughout the state with practical, useful and potentially life-saving information and training," said Rosemarie Ohar, OSHA's area director in Concord. "This alliance will equip them with the knowledge to evaluate, identify and eliminate a variety of work-related hazards before they result in injury or illness." NHC3UA is a cooperative program co-founded by the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College to help New Hampshire colleges and universities reach their environmental health and safety goals. Seventeen colleges, universities and community colleges systems currently belong to NHC3UA. The alliance was signed in Concord by OSHA's Ohar; NH-DES-CP Consultation Manager Stephen Beyer; and NHC3UA founders Brad Manning, director, environmental health and safety, University of New Hampshire, and Michael Blayney, Ph.D., director, environmental health and safety, Dartmouth College. The first alliance event will be a training session on heavy equipment and maintenance to be held Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon EST at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. To register, call 603-862-4029. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
