WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American Red Cross Wyoming Valley Chapter have launched an alliance to promote workplace safety and health for businesses in the chapter's service area. Andrew Hedesh, OSHA's area director in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., represented the agency at a recent signing ceremony. OSHA and the Red Cross Wyoming Valley Chapter will work together to provide local businesses with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. Classes will address the following topics, among others: First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) and bloodborne pathogens. "This alliance is designed to provide training and education programs to help area businesses ensure that their employees stay safe and healthy on the job," said Hedesh. "Establishing a collaborative relationship is vital to ensuring a safe and healthful workplace." The alliance will remain in effect for two years. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative programs. OSHA currently has more than 450 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
