SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today signed a safety and health alliance agreement with the Central Illinois Builders of Association of General Contractors with a goal of protecting workers from construction industry hazards. "This agreement provides an opportunity for the association and OSHA to jointly demonstrate that everyone benefits when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment," said Nick Walters, director of OSHA's area office in Peoria, Ill. "We want every employee to go home healthy and uninjured at the end of the day." The Central Illinois Builders of Association of General Contractors is an association that includes expertise in management and labor services. The organization represents 28 general contractor companies, 58 specialty construction companies, 54 associate supplier members and 37 union trade locals. This alliance will affect more than 20,000 employer and employee participants in central Illinois. The builders association and union members have set goals to provide a safer working environment for all employees, achieve a reduction in injuries and illnesses, and prevent fatalities in the construction industry. Under the partnership, they will provide safety and health materials and education to employees. OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 455 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998. OSHA's Peoria Area Office helped form this partnership. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
