Agreement continues to highlight ergonomic-related issues WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American Dental Association (ADA) today renewed their two-year Alliance, continuing a collaborative relationship to foster a safe and healthful working environment for dental employees nationwide. Originally signed in April 2004, the Alliance will continue to concentrate particularly on the identification and prevention of ergonomic hazards in the dental profession. "We are happy to renew our partnership with the American Dental Association through the Alliance agreement," said OSHA Administrator Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "OSHA will invariably benefit from the expertise of the ADA as we continue to strive for maximum health and safety standards for employees in the dental industry." "We are very pleased to continue our relationship with OSHA in a manner that seeks voluntary means of addressing ergonomics issues that are of concern to both OSHA and the ADA," added Dr. James B. Bramson, ADA executive director. Dr. Robert M. Brandjord, the association's President, echoed those sentiments saying the ADA "is very supportive of the Alliance agreement with OSHA because it provides an effective means of collaborating on ergonomics matters that both the agency and organized dentistry view as important to the health and well being of dentists and their staff." Throughout the first two years of the Alliance, OSHA and ADA raised awareness about ergonomics in the dental profession through presentations and the development and maintenance of OSHA's electronic assistance tools. For example, an OSHA representative spoke at the ADA's 146th Annual Session in Philadelphia in October 2005. ADA also serves on the editorial boards of OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention and Dentistry Safety and Health Topics pages. ADA and OSHA will continue working together on specific issues and projects related to good ergonomic health in the dentistry profession, and will also supply ADA members with information regarding the recognition and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. The Alliance will continue looking into methods to communicate this information effectively by way of print, electronic media, electronic assistance tools and the organizations' Web sites. Founded in 1859, the ADA provides updates on issues concerning dentists, their employees and their patients to over 153,000 members across the country. The organization's areas of concern include workplace safety and health. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
