AUGUSTA, Maine -- Researching and identifying hazards in Maine workplaces to reduce occupational injuries and illnesses are the goals of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Maine Occupational Research Agenda (MORA) and the Maine Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Standards' 21(d) Consultation Project (SafetyWorks!). OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's efforts to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations, government and labor. MORA works to improve the health and safety of Maine workplaces by fostering health and safety research, building research partnerships, promoting a comprehensive occupational injury and illness data system for Maine and setting research priorities. SafetyWorks! is the safety and health consultation service for Maine employers. "This alliance offers us an opportunity to work together to research and identify those health and safety hazards affecting employees in Maine's workplaces," said Kimberly Castillon, OSHA's area director for Maine. "Using that information, we can then provide workers and their employers with specific training to recognize and address those hazards before they harm workers." The three agencies will work to coordinate and deliver training activities designed to inform employers and workers of specific hazards within their occupations, both in construction and general industry. Training will focus on such hazards as occupational asthma, toxic exposures, fatalities, musculoskeletal disorders and pesticides, among others. They will also work on specific issues and projects developed through the alliance; develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the business value of safety and health in the workplace, and identify additional areas of concern to workers and employers that could be addressed by the alliance. The alliance was signed by Castillon; Jonathan Lepoff, chairman, MORA; and David Wacker, director, SafetyWorks!. OSHA has created more than 400 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
