OSHA and National Federation of Independent Business/Ohio Launch Job Safety Alliance

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Federation of Independent Business/Ohio (NFIB) have launched an alliance aimed at preventing workplace hazards.

"OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's efforts to improve the health and safety of workers," said Deborah Zubaty, OSHA's area director in Columbus. "They provide an opportunity to cooperate with OSHA in training and education, outreach and communication, and they promote a national dialogue on workplace safety and health."

The two-year alliance will provide members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. OSHA and the NFIB will develop training and education programs for small businesses and workers regarding electrical hazards, machine guarding, proper lockout and tagout of power equipment, and written safety and health programs. The alliance will also develop workplace safety and health curricula based on OSHA's Web site for small businesses.

OSHA and the NFIB will work together to develop and communicate information to help businesses and workers recognize and prevent job-related hazards. At conferences and public forums, alliance members will share information regarding best practices and forge innovative solutions to improve workplace safety and health. NFIB members will be encouraged to participate in NFIB's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

The alliance will also promote and encourage participation in OSHA's cooperative programs. These include compliance assistance, safety and health consultation programs, the Voluntary Protection Programs and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to ensure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
