WASHINGTON - A new OSHA safety information pocket card, Fireworks Safety Tips, provides quick tips for retail fireworks sales and for display operators in the pyrotechnic industry. The cards were developed with the assistance of the American Pyrotechnics Association, an OSHA Alliance program participant. "This new card provides very practical safety advice that can help prevent serious injuries and save lives," said Jonathan L. Snare, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. "We encourage employers and workers to obtain the cards and use them as a frequent reference to help them stay safe on the job." The new card includes safety tips for retail fireworks sales on one side and lists safe practices for display operators on the other. The cards can be downloaded from OSHA's web site on the publications page or can be ordered by calling OSHA's publications office at (202) 693-1888. Tips for retail fireworks sales include: keep exits clear and accessible; know all exit routes and alarm procedures; maintain view of fireworks; know fire extinguisher location and operation; remove and dispose of damaged fireworks; remove loose pyrotechnic powder promptly; use only non-sparking tools and do not use vacuum cleaners; do not allow smoking within 50 feet of sales area; and always keep facilities secure. Recommendations for display operators include making sure personnel are trained and competent; obtaining required licenses, permits and inspections; maintaining display site security and communication; wearing protective gear and proper clothing; prohibiting accidental ignition sources, properly installing mortar boxes, racks and drums; keeping fireworks dry and in good condition; keeping fireworks cartons closed; handling fireworks carefully; and staying away from loaded mortars. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
