Chavez Office: (617) 565-2075 OSHA and Hispanic Resource Center Form Westchester County Safety & Health Alliance NEW YORK -- Improving workplace safety and health for Hispanic workers is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Hispanic Resource Center of Larchmont - Mamaroneck (HRC). "The alliance between OSHA and HRC is a good example of this Administration's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "These efforts have resulted in a decline in fatalities among Hispanic workers for the first time since 1995. Partnerships such as this one will help to ensure that this positive trend continues." Through the alliance, the Tarrytown area office of OSHA and the HRC will develop Spanish-language training and education programs on safety in general industry and construction. They will target HRC members, and others, who are exposed to falls, amputations, or electrical hazards in their workplaces, as well as the danger of being struck by or caught in between objects. Training will include OSHA's 10- and 30-hour construction and general industry courses in Spanish. The Hispanic Resource Center, a community-based organization, serves Larchmont and Mamaroneck, N.Y. and the greater Westchester County area. HRC helps Hispanics with issues or concerns regarding immigration, housing, employment, translating documents and health and nutrition. Some of the programs HRC is developing to address the needs of immigrants in the community include English as a second language courses and seminars on employment topics such as how to complete a job application, interviewing skills and worker rights. OSHA and HRC will develop training and education programs on workplace hazards that non-English or limited English-speaking employees encounter. These will include electronic assistance tools and links from OSHA's Internet homepage. Bi-lingual individuals will be encouraged to attend OSHA's train-the-trainer courses for construction and general industry so they can qualify to teach Hispanic workers the OSHA 10- and 30-hour courses in Spanish, according to Diana Cortez, OSHA's Tarrytown area director and coordinator for OSHA's outreach to Hispanic workers in the New York region. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
