SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Promoting safe and healthful working conditions for workers in New York State's construction industry is the goal of a newly established alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's New York offices and the Syracuse-based ABC Workers' Compensation Trust. The Alliance will train and educate the region's construction workers in ergonomic hazards and the best practices companies have implemented to reduce those hazards. The training will both protect construction workers and raise their awareness of the value of ergonomic safety in construction. "OSHA plans to reduce ergonomic injuries through alliances like this as part of its overall strategic plan for worker health and safety ," said Patricia K.Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "Alliances such as this allow the industry to showcase effective programs that protect the health and safety of workers and act as role models." "This alliance provides a new collaborative approach to managing safety and health that will assist both OSHA and ABC Workers' Trust in achieving a high caliber, better trained workforce in New York State," said Charles Reller, administrator of the ABC Workers' Compensation Trust. OSHA's Syracuse, Albany, Buffalo, and Tarrytown Offices will work with the ABC Workers' Compensation Trust to jointly develop and disseminate information and training on safety excellence and management. The training will be conducted through seminars and conferences, print and electronic media, including links from OSHA's Web site, and sharing of construction industry best practices to construction employees and workers throughout New York State. A joint OSHA/ABC Workers' Compensation Trust implementation team will meet on a regular schedule to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. The alliance will remain in effect for two years. The Alliance was signed June 30, 2003, at the OSHA Syracuse Area Office, by Diane Brayden, Syracuse area director; John Tomich, Albany area director; Arthur Dube, Buffalo area director; Diana Cortez, Tarrytown area director; Patricia K. Clark, OSHA regional administrator; and Charles Reller, ABC Workers' Compensation Trust administrator. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers.
