Safer Work Sites and Healthier Workers Goals of New Alliance Signed by OSHA, Consulate General of Mexico, and Georgia Tech

ATLANTA -- Preventing injuries and illnesses among the Hispanic workforce is the goal of a new alliance forged here by U.S., Mexican and Georgia Tech officials.

Alliance documents were signed Dec. 7, by Cindy Coe Laseter, regional administrator in Atlanta for the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); Remedios Gomez-Arnau, consul general of Mexico in Atlanta, and Daniel J. Ortiz, director of the occupational safety and health program for Georgia Tech Research Institute's Safety, Health and Environmental Technology Division.

The alliance will develop and distribute safety and health materials in Spanish and English, and work with community-based organizations to disseminate safety information to Mexican workers. It will also publicize the availability of an OSHA toll-free number and a Consulate phone number that Mexican workers can call for assistance in recognizing, reducing and reporting workplace safety and health hazards.

A Construction Hazard Awareness Training (CHAT) program will concentrate on reducing safety and health hazards in an industry that traditionally employs Mexican workers.

"This alliance fosters Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's and Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Ernesto Derbez's commitment to improve the health and safety of workers," said Coe Laseter.

Gomez-Arnau added: "The agreement demonstrates the alliance's commitment to effectively reduce the fatality and injury rate of Hispanic workers throughout the southeast."

On July 21, 2004, the United Mexican States, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and OSHA signed a joint declaration and letter of agreement in Washington, D.C., to promote safety and health protection for Mexican workers in the United States.
