Footprint on Earth

One of our core organizational values is environmental stewardship. EPA Region 6 is leading by example by implementing a comprehensive Environmental Management System, or EMS. This is comprised of specific plans to address the impacts our operations have on the environment, such as electricity use, paper use, water use, recycling, air emissions and transportation, purchasing, and sustainable design of our facilities. Like many other organizations, our EMS is structured to conform with the International Organization of Standards' ISO 14001:2004(E) Standard,Exit EPA Disclaimer "Environmental management systems - Requirements with guidance for use." Initially, we have focused upon management programs for the following environmental aspects:

  1. Electricity Use
  2. Vehicle Air Emissions and Fuel Use
  3. Paper Use
  4. Recycling and Waste Reduction
  5. Electronic Stewardship
Formal procedures and training are employed to review and update our programs, and to measure and monitor our performance in meeting specific performance targets in these areas in order to continuously improve our performance metrics and maintain a "green" operation focused on environmental stewardship

During the 2009 fiscal year, we will add management plans for Affirmative Procurement, Sustainable Facilities and Water Use. We will also reach out to other federal agencies, universities, and organizations that are interested in implementing their own EMSs to provide assistance and guidance in their efforts.
