About Roseburg

Public lands of the Roseburg District, located in southwestern Oregon, contain some of the most productive forests in the world, including dense stands of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar. The district is criss-crossed with streams and rivers that support sport fishing and contribute to anadromous (sea run) fish stocks vital to commercial fishing. An important mainstay of the local economy is the wood products industry, which acquires timber from both private and federal lands in the region. With Interstate 5 running through the middle of the district, and east-west state highways connecting Crater Lake to the Pacific coast, the Roseburg District draws many tourists to its scenic and recreation attractions.

District Programs

Fisheries

The challenge facing the communities and people of the Pacific Northwest is conserving the salmon and water resources. Efforts are being made by the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and the State of Oregon to improve the habitat conditions for Coho Salmon, a federally threatened species. To achieve the goal of restoring salmon populations, active restoration projects are being proposed and implemented. The land management practices being applied today should help to insure the health and survival and population of salmon and other aquatic-dependent species.

Abandoned Mines

Over the last 150 years, much of the land managed by the BLM in the West has experienced some form of mining activity, ranging from exploration to full development. In many cases, these activities were not properly reclaimed, and there are no identifiable responsible parties to help with the clean-up, leaving safety and environmental concerns that BLM must deal with today.

Special Forest Products

Special Forest Products (SFP) are all the non-timber products available on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) forest lands such as beargrass, boughs, burls, firewood, floral greenery, mushrooms, poles, and Christmas trees. BLM's SFP Program serves the public by linking the forest resources to the people who harvest them. Whether for recreation, personal use, or as a source of income, SFPs are available to the public for harvesting.

Cadastral Surveying

Cadastral comes from the Latin base term Cadastre referring to a registry of lands, so Cadastral Surveying is determining and defining land ownership and boundaries. Cadastral Survey is an operational program within the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior. Here in Roseburg our focus is performing legal boundary surveys; establishing or reestablishing, marking and maintaining federal boundaries within BLM’s Roseburg District.Our Mission in Roseburg is to provide Cadastral Surveys, legal and spatial land information products and related services to enhance the management of the natural and cultural resources. We will continually improve the quality of our services and perform in a manner warranting the highest degree of confidence.
