The Uruguayan market for air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment (HS codes 7322, 8414, 8415, 8418, 9419 and 8479) increased by 81% from 2004 to 2006. Industry experts predict that current market trends in the construction of high-priced apartment buildings, luxurious hotels and commercial buildings will continue to grow in the next three years. The most popular residential systems are mini-splits. However, according to industry experts, the use of variable refrigerant volume (VRV) systems is increasingly accepted by the sector, with very good prospects for the future. In 2006, total imports were valued at US$33.5 million. The largest suppliers were China, with a 30% market share (US$10 million), and Brazil, with 29% market share (US$9 million). Other significant suppliers include Argentina (15%), Mexico (8%), Chile (5%), Italy (5%) and the U.S. (2%). There is no local production of air-conditioning equipment in Uruguay. There are no special regulations, technical or safety standards applicable to air-conditioning units.
