APR 27 -- BOWLING GREEN, KY - Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today that Johnny Travis, age 41, of Glasgow, Kentucky, and Maxie Murray, age 36, of Glasgow, Kentucky, pled guilty on April 22, 2009, to illegally possessing hydrocodone and tampering with a witness. Travis and Murray are former majors in the Glasgow Police Department.

Travis and Murray admitted that between February 2004 and March 2008, they conspired with each other and others to illegally possess hydrocodone, an addictive Schedule III pain killer which is legally available only by prescription. Travis and Murray also both admitted that on June 25, 2008, they both attempted to corruptly persuade a witness not to share information about their crimes with law enforcement, when they threatened the witness during a recorded conversation.

The maximum potential penalties are 21 years in federal prison, a $251,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of 3 years. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Weiser, and it was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Barren County Drug Task Force.

The pleas were entered before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Thomas B. Russell, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Travis and Murray are scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Russell on August 4, 2009, at 12:00 p.m., in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
