About the 2009 Earth Day video project
Throughout the month of April, 2009, we featured the videos you created. In honor of Earth Day on April 22, we asked you to share your videos that inspire others to proetect the environment.
How did it work?
Here is all the information for how the 2009 Earth Day video project was conducted. While we are no longer featuring videos, you are welcome to continue to share your videos on the YouTube groups.
What do you do to reduce your carbon footprint? Can you swim or play in the water near your home? What have you done to improve the environment in your home, school or workplace? Americans are getting involved in protecting our environment – please share your experience with the world! Your video can be instructional, inspirational, or testimonial. We’re looking for videos that call others to action.
Your video might be funny or serious, entertaining or educational, quirky or enlightening. We don’t expect you to enter television quality videos, we want you to share your stories.
- Create your video, up to 90 seconds long (you can say a lot in a minute and a half!)
- In your free YouTube account join one of the Earth Day Video project groups, below.
- Enter one video in any category, or one in each category:

Entering
Who can enter?
You can be a citizen of any country, living anywhere. As long as you're 13 or older, you're welcome to enter. Children under 13 are not permitted to access YouTube, so if you're younger than that, please ask your parent, guardian, or teacher to enter your video. Your classroom can enter a video, your workplace can enter a video, the project is not restricted in any way.
Other than that, the only people who can't enter are the EPA selection committee members who are choosing the videos to feature during the Earth Day month of April.
When do I enter?
You can enter starting now and throughout the month of April.
How do I enter?
The project runs on YouTube.com, a video sharing site, to encourage participation and provide maximum public access. We don’t prefer YouTube.com over any other video sharing site, but because it has such a big audience, this year we’re using that site.
To enter your video:
- Create your video, no longer than 90 seconds.
- Need advice for making your video? There’s lots of great help on-line – search for ideas on making short films.
- If you don't have a free YouTube account, create one .
- Upload your video to your account.
- Be sure to enter the follow information about your video when you upload it to your account:
- Title – you can change it from your video’s file name
- Description of your video
- For each category you want to enter, join the appropriate group and upload your video to that group. There are 4 groups:
- Reducing your carbon footprint
- Conserving and protecting water
- Protecting the environment
- Reduce, reuse, recycle
- Check YouTube’s Help Resources if you need more information about how to use YouTube.
You control your own videos on your YouTube account and can decide whether you accept comments.
We “approve” your submission before we let other people see it in the group. Be sure your video is appropriate and on topic before entering it to the group. Please see our rules.
What can I enter?
Do your best to show the categories. Make the selection team see the connection.
Feel free to...
- enter videos taken anywhere in the world.
- enter color, black and white, or animated videos.
- edit your video however you like.
- enter videos taken at any time.
- enter videos that have been used elsewhere, as long as you don’t violate any copyright rules.
- you didn't create, or for which someone else owns the copyright.
- just show someone else's copyrighted work
- serve mainly to advertise a product.
- show nudity, drugs, violence, or symbols or acts of hatred.
- are illegal or prohibited.
- are longer than 90 seconds
- violate YouTube’s community guidelines
By entering your videos, you agree to all of the above. We reserve the right to disqualify videos for any reason.
How many videos can I enter?
One per category.
Featuring
How will you choose the videos to feature?
We will review the videos submitted to the group and feature those that do a great job of teaching and inspiring us to protect the environment. Your videos might be funny or serious, entertaining or educational, quirky or enlightening. We’ll feature videos throughout the month of April.
Do you have to join to see all the videos?
No. You’re welcome to see the videos submitted to the group (link to group page). You only need to have a YouTube account if you plan to enter a video to the project.
Other Information
Do I need a YouTube account to participate?
You will need a YouTube account to submit a video. You can get a free account quickly and easily.
You don't need an account to simply browse through the entries.
Who gets the copyright?
By submitting videos, you give the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permission to feature them on any page on the epa.gov Web site. This permission includes, but is not limited to, EPA Web sites and our intranet. You will not be compensated for such use. However, where reasonable, we will give you credit for the videos.
Anything else I need to know?
By entering your videos, you agree to all of the above.
