Opportunities for Industry Professionals with the SEC

The SEC is seeking highly qualified industry professionals to serve as Industry and Markets Fellows in the Office of Risk Assessment.

How to Apply

Individuals interested in applying for a position as an Industry and Markets Fellow should submit a resume and a cover letter to industryfellows@sec.gov before June 1, 2009.

Hiring Office

The Industry and Markets Fellows serve in the Office of Risk Assessment. The Office identifies, assesses and manages risks to the Commission's mission in the following ways:

  • through regular outreach to market participants to gather information regarding products, practices or processes that may pose risks to investors or markets;
  • through analysis of information received from a variety of sources to assist the Commission in understanding how markets evolve; and
  • through devising enterprise solutions aimed at improving SEC staff's use and sharing of information.

The Office of Risk Assessment also works closely with other SEC staff to identify the need for, and create, risk-based and analytic tools aimed at prioritizing resource deployment for inspection and enforcement. In addition, the Office serves as the central hub for the SEC's risk identification process designed to facilitate the collection and reporting of risks identified by staff throughout the Commission.

Industry and Markets Fellows Program

The Industry and Markets Fellows Program is designed to bring highly-seasoned financial markets professionals with specific knowledge of industry practice into the SEC in order to strengthen the Commission's oversight of the securities markets as they evolve. The Fellows work alongside staff in the Office of Risk Assessment in order to: i) identify risks to investor protection and market efficiency that might arise through current business practices; ii) assess if staff's current understanding of business practices is up to date; and iii) assist in raising staff's understanding and knowledge of industry practice where necessary through training and interaction.

Work assignments for Fellows are tailored to the expertise of the participant and the needs of the Office of Risk Assessment and other Commission offices and divisions. Based on the Fellows' expertise, assignments may include:

  • identifying products, practices, and processes that pose risks to investors and markets; assisting staff in identifying and collecting additional information necessary to better understand the scope or impact of the risk;
  • developing educational/informational programs and materials to help familiarize SEC staff with current industry practices, products, trends and related risks;
  • working closely with managers in offices and divisions to help design responses and solutions to identified risks; and
  • engaging in discussions with representatives from a wide range of institutions, including but not limited to regulated and unregulated market participants, domestic and international regulators, academics and others.

The Program will initially include three full-time Fellow positions.

Desired Experience

The SEC is seeking individuals with extensive experience in financial markets and in-depth applied knowledge of current industry practices. Relevant experience can be a result of work in a variety of industry segments, including but not limited to experience in trading in equity and fixed income securities, structured products, complex derivatives, financial analysis and valuation, fund management, investment banking and financial services operations. The Program is open to different types of professionals, which may include attorneys, economists, accountants, risk professionals and other experts in the securities industry.

Candidates should be able to work independently or collaborate with others on projects of high visibility, including conducting special studies, meeting and consulting with the heads of various SEC divisions and offices, and assisting in coordinating projects between several different organizations.

Term

Fellow appointments may be for up to two years and may be extended for an additional two years. Total appointments may not exceed four years.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience. In 2009, salaries for Industry and Markets Fellows range from $108,286 to $227,300.
