Citizenship Requirements for Attorneys at the SEC

While citizenship is required for most federal government employment, the SEC may hire non-U.S. citizens for certain positions. All non-U.S. citizens must meet State Department hiring conditions in order to be eligible for consideration.

Citizens of allied nations may be hired for compensated positions within the excepted service (e.g., attorneys and temporary positions), provided all other legal and regulatory requirements for appointments are met. For example, candidates should be permanent residents of the U.S. or otherwise eligible to obtain a work visa from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Citizens of non-allied nations are eligible for voluntary positions only and must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree program.

Please visit OPM's website: www.opm.gov/employ/html/Citizen.htm for more information on citizenship requirements for federal government employment.

Non-attorney positions at the SEC require U.S. Citizenship.
