 RIMS II Multipliers

RIMS II multipliers, which consist of final-demand multipliers and direct-effect multipliers, may be ordered for any user-defined region or for any RIMS II industry.

By region. Multipliers may be ordered for any user-defined region at a cost of $225 per region, where regions consist of one or more contiguous counties. For each region that you order, you will receive final-demand and direct-effect multipliers for all the RIMS II industries in the region. Note: Multipliers for each county or state within the region will not be provided.

To estimate the total economic impact of a project or program, the region should conform to the area that is consistent with the underlying assumption of these multipliers that the direct inputs, including employees, are included within the region.

By industry. Multipliers may be ordered for any RIMS II industry at a cost of $50 per industry. For each industry that you order, you will receive final-demand and direct-effect multipliers for all the states and the District of Columbia.

Note: Regional input-output multipliers such as the RIMS II multipliers attempt to estimate how much a one-time or sustained increase in economic activity in a particular region will be supplied by industries located in the region. RIMS II multipliers differ from macro-economic multipliers used to assess the effects of fiscal stimulus on gross national product. Differences in industry-specific regional multipliers are not meaningful or appropriate for use in a national context.

Data Series

RIMS II multipliers are available in two series—one based on more recent but less detailed national annual input-output data, the other based on more detailed but less current national benchmark input-output data. Both series can be used to estimate the impacts on 20 row industries (PDF • 29 KB).

Annual series. The multipliers are based on 2006 national annual input-output data and 2006 regional data. These multipliers are available for 60 aggregated industries (PDF • 78 KB).

Benchmark series. The multipliers are based on 1997 national benchmark input-output data and 2006 regional data. These multipliers are available for 473 detailed industries (PDF • 515 KB) and for the same 60 aggregated industries that are provided in the annual series.

Multiplier Type

RIMS II multipliers are available in two types—type I and type II.

Type I. These multipliers account for the direct and indirect impacts based on how goods and services are supplied within the region. Although Type I multipliers are appropriate for some types of analysis, these multipliers exclude the induced impacts associated with the spending of earnings by labor within the region.

Type II. These multipliers not only account for the direct and indirect impacts based on how goods and services are supplied within the region, but they also account for the induced impacts based on changes in the spending of earnings by labor within the region. As a result, Type II multipliers are more commonly used and appropriate for most types of analysis.
