WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service (CRS) Director Sharee M. Freeman will speak at the 2004 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Convention on Friday, July 9, 2004 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, 200 E. Market St., San Antonio, Texas.

During the Women's Luncheon on Friday, Director Freeman will discuss CRS initiatives with Hispanic communities in promoting diversity and improving race relations. CRS was created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, to be the only federal agency to assist state and local units of government, private and public organizations, and community groups with preventing and resolving racial and ethnic tensions, incidents, and civil disorders, and in restoring racial stability and harmony.

All convention events and seminars are open to the media. The LULAC media contact for the event is Lorraine Quiroga, 202.833.6130.

The 2004 LULAC National Convention, centered around the theme Celebrating Our Legacy: Defining Our Future, is expected to draw over 10,000 Hispanic leaders during a week of seminars and notable events. LULAC's 75th anniversary celebration will offer policy workshops, banquets, a job fair, a three-day exposition, a federal training institute and the election of LULAC national officers.

CRS is a unique federal agency dedicated to preventing and resolving racial and ethnic conflicts. For more information about the Community Relations Service, a component of the U.S. Department of Justice, see its Web site at: www.usdoj.gov/crs.
