     WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Justice Department today announced that U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service Director Sharee M. Freeman will be a guest speaker at a civil rights training conference luncheon. The conference - The Exercise and Enforcement of Civil Rights Post 9/11 - will be held on October 9, 2003 at noon at the Denver, Colorado Convention Center.

      The conference will be held as a result of collaboration among federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as local bar associations and public advocates. The two-day conference will provide critical information to elected officials, policy makers, business leaders, the legal community, and community and advocacy organizations, on civil rights enforcement during a period of heightened national security.

     Immigration policy, racial profiling, health, housing, employment, affirmative action, Native American programs, and religious and language discrimination will be some of the specific topics addressed by government and community leaders. Speakers at the conference include Director Freeman, U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado John W. Suthers, Colorado State Attorney General Ken Salazar, and Latin American Research and Service Agency Executive Director Polly Baca.
