CRS: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS SERVICE (CRS) TO SPONSOR ARAB MUSLIM, AND SIKH AWARENESS AND PROTOCOL SEMINAR AT GOLDEN GATE UNIVERSITY IN SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service (CRS) will sponsor an Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Awareness and Protocol Seminar for law enforcement, local officials, and community leaders at Golden Gate University, 536 S. Mission Street, San Francisco, California on Friday, June 6, 2003. CRS National Director Sharee M. Freeman will make keynote remarks. The seminar will be held in the university auditorium on the 5th Floor. The morning session and keynote remarks will be at 8:45 a.m. Media are welcome to attend the opening keynote remarks. The seminar will be open to registered participants only.

Peter G. Keane, Dean, School of Law at Golden Gate University, which offered the meeting space for the seminar, will give welcoming remarks.

This is one of a series of educational and "train the trainer" seminars for community leaders, law enforcement, and Federal, State, and local officials sponsored by the Community Relations Service as a continuation of its efforts to address issues and concerns arising in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Community dialogues, forums, and cultural awareness and protocol seminars sponsored by CRS to assist and educate citizens, officials, and law enforcement about the Arab, Muslim, and Sikh cultures have been effective in defusing tensions aimed at members of those communities. Community representatives from Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Oregon, Texas, and Washington will be attending this seminar.

The cultural awareness presentations will be made by members of the Arab, Muslim, and Sikh communities.

The first seminar of this series was held on May 29, 2003, in Reading, Pennsylvania, for Berks County law enforcement, local officials, business and civic leaders, and community representatives. Future training seminars will be held in Sayreville, New Jersey on June 12, 2003; and Miami, Florida on June 26, 2003; and Aurora, Colorado on July 9, 2003.
