Management on Upland Fields
You
may have noticed a burned-out area on the left as you drive past the Visitor
Information area at The Brigantine Division. This is part of a test
plot which is being used by The
New Jersey Field Office of The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
They will be using natural seeds in an attempt to restore the grassland
in the field. As grassland disappears, biological diversity diminishes.
Grassland is important habitat for game species. It also provides
essential habitat for many non-game birds, some of them grassland-dependent
species. Restoration of grassland habitat on private lands is critical
to the well-being of grassland-dependent birds. Grazing or mowing,
alone or in combination, are common management techniques. Other
restoration efforts involve seeding with natural or naturalized grasses
and mowing brush. This test plot will be used to show individuals
what possibilities exist for grassland restoration.
