Watershed Management

You need it, we've got it - everything to get you started on watershed planning. Listed below, you will find background information on why a comprehensive watershed approach is useful in managing your aquatic resources, step-by-step guidance on navigating the planning process yourself; and many desktop and field methods to help you evaluate the overall conditions of your watershed.

Small Watershed Planning
Recipes for crafting an effective local watershed plan.  Here you will be able to access technical publications such as our restoration manuals, watershed user's guides, and articles from the Practice of Watershed Protection.  Links to some of the watershed plans we have developed are also available.

Desktop Analysis
A sans-wader approach to assess watersheds from the comfort of your office.  Here you will find a variety of mapping and modeling tools for analyzing current and future watershed conditions, including techniques for estimating impervious cover, inventorying wetlands, and predicting pollutant loads.

Field Assessment
An excuse to get away from your desk, our stream and upland assessment protocols include the Unified Stream Assessment, the Unified Subwatershed and Site Reconnaissance, Outfall Reconnaissance Investigation, and retrofit inventory (to name a few).  Field forms and post-processing spreadsheets are also provided.
