U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $1.5 million to assist workers in Idaho

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,520,633 grant to assist approximately 300 workers affected by the closure of MPC Computers LLC in Nampa, Idaho.

"This grant will provide training and education opportunities for workers so that they can upgrade existing skills and transition to careers in new industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

The Idaho Department of Labor will receive the grant, under which workers will have access to job search and placement assistance, skills assessment, counseling, case management and follow-up services. All workers targeted for services also have been certified by the Labor Department as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance.

MPC Computers issued a public notice on Nov. 5, 2008, announcing the immediate layoff of workers. On Nov. 7, company officials filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and, subsequently, announced that the Nampa facility would close. Company officials issued another public notice on Dec. 20 announcing the immediate layoff of additional workers. The facility closure will be completed during 2009. At that time, the remaining employees will be laid off.

Of the $1,520,633 announced today, $889,996 will be released initially. This initial release will be funded from the secretary of labor's discretionary fund under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Additional funding up to the full amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
