U.S. Department of Education
Strategic Plan, 1998-2002

September 30, 1997

In response to the Government Performance and Results Act, the U.S. Department of Education has prepared a strategic plan for 1998-2002. The strategic plan was submitted to Congress on September 30, 1997. The strategic plan describes the Department's mission, goals, objectives, and strategies for achieving the objectives. It also includes performance indicators that will provide feedback on our progress.

The Department consulted widely with outside groups while developing the plan. A draft for comment appeared on the Department's web site. We distributed copies to stakeholder groups, including education community, civil rights, general government, and business organizations. We consulted with staff from Congressional committees, the General Accounting Office, and the Office of Management and Budget. We received comments from the Council for Excellence in Government.

We welcome further comments on the plan. Instructions for submitting comments appear in the box below.
