Institute of Museum
and Library Services
Office of Strategic Partnerships
Overview
The Office of Strategic Partnerships at
the Institute of Museum and Library Services seeks a part-time
intern for the fall and/or spring semester to assist with
special projects and initiatives. Work will be focused
on, but not limited to, the role of museums and libraries
in supporting programs and services for youth. The intern
may design a flexible schedule around classes, with a
minimum commitment of 8-10 hours a week.
IMLS is an independent federal agency serving
as the primary source of federal support for the nation’s
museums and libraries. IMLS’ mission is to build
the capacity of museums and libraries to create and sustain
a nation of learners. The agency plays a leadership role
by making grants, convening national experts, and supporting
research. The Office of Strategic Partnerships creates
and maintains interagency and other collaborations that
further the IMLS mission and use the educational resources
of museums and libraries more effectively across government
and non-governmental organizations. This effort includes
continuing and strengthening existing partnerships as
well as initiating new relationships.
The position is being extended to master’s
degree candidates with coursework relevant to museum or
library administration, education, project management,
or grant-making. Required skills include organizing and
prioritizing multiple tasks and working independently;
skill in written and oral communication; and familiarity
with MS Office software. The intern will be exposed to
knowledge of the principles and practices of the museum
and library fields, including planning and collaborations;
developing/participating in strategic partnerships; and
museum and library funding programs. Unfortunately, we
are not able to pay our interns. We will cooperate in
arrangements for graduate school credit.
To apply for a fall internship, please send
a cover letter and a resume on or before September 30;
for a spring internship, by December 15. IMLS is willing
to accommodate summer internships or those that extend
beyond a single semester in order to meet credit requirements
of the university. Please forward the materials to:
