The panel discussions also highlighted ways that communications may be expanded and enhanced in response to a pandemic and how the communications industry will serve an instrumental role in such a response.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau hosted a summit on the nation’s Emergency Alert System (EAS): Promoting an Effective Emergency Alert System on the Road to a Next Generation EAS, Monday, May 19, 2008, 9:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., in the Commission Meeting Room (TW-C305).
Panel discussions focused on the current state of the nation’s EAS and what is needed to transition to a more robust, Next Generation alert and warning system to ensure that all citizens receive accurate and timely information during emergencies.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB) hosted a Health Care Summit, in conjunction with U.S. Health & Human Services on Emergency Communications, Response and Recovery on Thursday, November 1, 2007, 9:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., in the Commission Meeting Room (TW-C305).
In addition to other communication capabilities the Summit focused on hospital emergency communications plans and preparedness efforts, including the use of alternative technologies to bolster response capabilities.

Tips for Communicating in an Emergency

The Summit examined how communications networks are managed during mass emergency situations.

PSHSB hosted a Summit on Spectrum Policy and Management: Building Public Safety Communications on Friday, June 1, 2007, in the Commission Meeting Room. The summit included expert panel discussions led by representatives from the public safety community, the communications industry and government.
The Panelists focused on policy issues related to management of public safety spectrum to insure its efficient use. The panelists offered their perspectives on innovations and solutions for the creation of a nationwide interoperable communication network for public safety, as well as the benefits of utilizing public/private partnerships to accomplish this goal.
