The Office of Privacy and Civil Liberties (OPCL) supports the duties and responsibilities of the Department’s Chief Privacy and Civil Liberties Officer (CPCLO). The principle mission of OPCL is to protect the privacy and civil liberties of the American people by reviewing and overseeing the Department’s privacy operations and ensuring its privacy compliance, including compliance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and the E-Government Act of 2002; assisting the CPCLO in developing Departmental privacy policy and refining Department policies relating to the protection of civil liberties of individuals specifically in the context of the Department’s counterterrorism and law enforcement efforts; representing the Department with respect to international privacy policy issues; overseeing privacy-related reporting to the President and Congress; and coordinating the work of the Department relating to the protection of privacy and civil liberties.
