We have often suggested that a diagram greatly aids reviewers in understanding the flow of your research, how the objectives and subobjectives are integrated, and how the project team interacts. The importance is not in the diagram itself but that it provides a clear path and understanding of the plan which is elaborated in the text. There is no "magic" to the format.
