Clouded Salamander, Aneides ferreus

| The Clouded Salamander is a smaller salamander attaining lengths around 5 inches. Their background color is generally a dark brown which is overlain with flecks of gold or brass colored markings. The underside of adults is generally a solid gray. The toes on this species are unique because they are irregularly long and end in a square tip. The tail of the Clouded Salamander is also prehensile to help this species climb. The Clouded Salamander is found in older stand forests where there is much debris on the ground that holds moisture. They can also be found in areas where logging and fires have gone through creating habitat such as the loose debris or the numerous stumps that can be found along the forest floor. Their range is rather limited. They can be found in various forests on Vancouver Island and other surrounding islands in British Columbia. In the United states they are found along the coast from Oregon to northern California. |
