Peering Inside Nanowires

Semiconductor nanowires--tiny wires with a diameter as small as a few billionths of a meter--hold promise for devices of the future, but in order to utilize the novel properties of nanowires, their composition must be precisely controlled and understood. Now, using a technique called atom probe tomography, researchers at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, have provided an atomic-level view of the composition of a nanowire. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2009, its budget is $9.5 billion, which includes $3.0 billion provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to over 1,900 universities and institutions.
