Plan a field trip to Fort Pulaski National Monument!

When you bring your students to Fort Pulaski, you will:

• Learn about one of Savannah's most interesting historic sites.
• Help meet specific Georgia Performance Standards.
• Have fun.

Field trips to Fort Pulaski are free! This field trip is a teacher-directed activity designed for approximately 80 students (maximum) with one adult per 20 students. With advance planning, park rangers are available as resources. There are a variety of hands-on activities available for your students. Please contact Park Ranger Mike Weinstein at (912) 786-5787 to discuss options for your field trip.

You will need to make a reservation for your visit. Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. You should plan on being outdoors. 

You can plan either a self-guided visit or a visit with help from a park ranger.Ranger-guided activities, which are limited to 25 students per activity, include:

• Cannoneers, To Your Post -- Students reenact the historic process of loading and firing Civil War cannons.
• Flags That Talk -- Students use flags to relay messages in code the way soldiers sent information during the Civil War.
• The Hunter Regiment -- Students take on roles in this skit that dramatizes the complexity of life for ex-slaves during the Union’s control of coastal Georgia.
• Name That Island -- In this hands-on activity, students will assemble an over-sized puzzle of the islands surrounding Fort Pulaski. Students will label the islands and will trace the route of the Union forces as they brought cannons and supplies to subdue Fort Pulaski.

You must fill out a fee waiver request to qualify for a free field trip. You will receive a written confirmation (either by email or fax) when your fee waiver has been approved. Please bring this confirmation with you during your field trip and present it at the entrance booth.

There is a picnic area, with covered tables and rest rooms, in the park. The picnic area is a three- or four-minute drive from the Fort parking lot (or about a 3/4-mile walk from the parking lot). In order to maintain the historic character of the Fort, picnicking is not allowed inside the Fort.

Important facts to remember when applying for a fee waiver and planning your visit:

• Chaperones must remain with the group and there should be one adult per six students.
• You should plan to have your group arrive at the park at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled visit.
• Consider allowing time to tour the rest of the fort after your scheduled program. Guided programs are not able to cover the entire fort.
• On site parking is available. Please park in designated parking lot spaces. Buses should turn off their engines while in the parking lot.
• Public restrooms are available in the parking lot area, in the Fort and at the picnic area. Facilities are handicapped-accessible.
• Food and drink are not allowed in the visitor center.
