Fowler's Toad, Bufo fowleri

| Fowler's Toad was previously considered a subspecies of the Woodhouse's Toad (Bufo woodhousii fowleri), but researchers now regard it as a separate species, Bufo fowleri. This specimen to the left is from New Hampshire.Fowler's toad has three or more warts in the largest dark spots, which distinguishes it from the American Toad, the range of which overlaps considerably with Fowler's Toad, and the more similar Woodhouse's Toad. Fowler's Toad also has a virtually unspotted belly, while the American Toad frequently has a spotted belly. The background color can vary from gray to reddish brown. | |

| Fowler's Toad is known to hybridize with Woodhouse's Toad and even the American Toad (Bufo americanus), in which case it would show characteristics of both species. The photo to the left is an example of a hybrid American Toad × Fowler's Toad. |  |
