Great Plains Toad, Bufo cognatus

| The Great Plains Toad is a medium sized toad reaching snout-vent lengths of up to 4 inches. They are characterized by their distinct dark patches on their dorsal surface being surrounded by a white or cream colored border. The cranial crests meet at the snout to form a "boss" (prominent bump) seen in this photo and the last one. This is also the case with the Canadian Toad, but in this species the crests unite in the middle of the head and do not extend behind the eyes. In the Great Plains toad the crests extend back to the perotid glands. The belly of the Great Plains Toad is white or cream with no spots. There is little variation in the color pattern of the Great Plains Toad other than some specimens having cleaner markings and brighter patches versus dull ones. |  |
