Timeline for Congressional Earmarks

Current Competitions: No competitions in FY 2009. Awards will be made only to those entities identified in the appropriation legislation.

Earmarks:
Closing date: To ensure timely processing and prompt access to the grant funds, the Department strongly encourages all applicants to submit completed applications by May 1, 2009. However, if applicants are unable to meet the May 1st deadline, the latest that applications should be submitted is June 30, 2009.

The Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009 (Public Law 111-8) directed the Office of Innovation and Improvement to award grants under the Fund for the Improvement of Education, Programs of National Significance to 357 institutions and organizations specified in the explanatory statement accompanying the Act. Only those institutions and organizations named in the explanatory statement accompanying the Act may receive these grants. These earmarked institutions should review the application guidelines carefully before preparing an application.

A letter inviting applications for the earmark grants will be mailed beginning March 30, 2009, to the designated contact person for each project. The application guidelines, which will be mailed with the letter, instruct applicants that they may choose to submit their application by carrier, courier, or by using the Department's e-Grants system, at http://e-Grants.ed.gov. The letter will include the PIN for accessing the application package in e-Grants.
